Spike in COVID-19 cases, 68,020 new infections in 24 hours

NEW DELHI: According to the figures released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MHFW) today, India saw 68,020 new COVID-19 cases in a span of 24 hours, which is the highest single-day rise so far this year.

In terms of fatalities, 291 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours with Maharashtra recording the maximum casualties at 108 and Punjab follows with 69 daily deaths. 

As far as recoveries are concerned, 32,231 recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours, with Maharashtra reporting the maximum number of single-day recoveries with 17,874 newly recovered cases. As of date, India’s cumulative recoveries stood at 1,13,55,993 with a national recovery rate of 94.32%.

With the latest figures, the country's total active caseload has reached 5,21,808 which now stands at 4.33% of India’s total Positive Cases. A net incline of 35,498 cases recorded from the total active caseload in the last 24 hours.

The current tally has taken India's COVID-19 tally beyound 1.20 crore cases (1,20,39,644) and with active cases soaring past 5,23,000, India is now the 6th-worst hit country. 

Among the new cases, Maharashtra continues to report the highest daily new cases at 40,414, followed by Karnataka with 3,082 while Punjab reported 2,870 new cases and Delhi registered 1,881 new infections.

Five States, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh cumulatively account for 80.17% of the total active cases in the country

Coronavirus cases rise unabated across the globe with 127,884,088 infected by the deadly contagion. While 103,079,756 have recovered, 2,797,772 have died so far and the United States remains the worst-hit country with 30,966,974 cases and 562,551 deaths, followed by Brazil, India, France and Russia.
