Maharashtra extends ongoing lockdown till June 15

MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray today announced the extension of the ongoing lockdown for another fortnight till June 15, however, he also announced that relaxations will be granted depending upon the COVID-19 positivity rate and availability of oxygen beds. The CM said that while it was a good sign that cases are decreasing in the cities, rural areas of the state are seeing a spike which was a matter of concern.

Warning the citizens of a possible third wave, in his address to the state, Thackeray said, "We can't let the guard down, I don't know when and what date the third wave will come. So we have to to be prepared," he said further adding, "In the last three-four days, the numbers matched the peak of the last wave. But one good thing is the recovery rate which is now 92 per cent. Even the Case Fatality Rate has reduced."

Talking about the vaccination in the state, Thackeray said that there were limitations as far as production and availability of vaccines are concerned, but the administration was trying to procure vaccine. "Once we get vaccines, we will increase our capacity. I have been told that we will get it in June," he said.

Thackeray cautioned the citizens about children from getting infected, he said, "The third wave of COVID-19 can infect kids and although experts say they have more immunity, but if they get infected, it will be through us. So we have to take care of that."

He added that the state government was in discussion with paediatric experts on how to shield children from the infection.  He said that the government will take responsibility for children who lost their parents to the pandemic and will soon release guidelines in this regard.

On the deadly Mucormycosis commonly known as Black Fungus that was fast spreading among COVID-19 patients, the CM said that 3,000 such cases have been reported in the state.

As per the state administrative order which was issued shortly after, it said, in municipal corporations or regions of districts with less than 10 per cent Covid-19 positivity rate and where the availability of occupied oxygen beds will be less than 40 per cent, all the shops engaged in essential commodities and services that are currently open from 7 am to 11 am can now remain open from 7 am to 2 pm.
