Government cancels CBSE XII board exams, ICS follows suite

NEW DELHI: Following a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi the centre has decided to cancel the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 board exams considering the continuing COVID-19 pandemic across the country.

PM Modi said that the decision has been taken in the interest of students and the anxiety among the students, parents and teachers must be put to an end. Earlier in April, the CBSE class 10 board exams had also been cancelled.

During the high-level meeting, it was decided that the CBSE will take steps to compile the results of Class XII students as per a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner.

A while after the centre's decision to cancel the CBSE class 12 exams was made public, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICS) also decided to cancel its class 12 board examinations this year. Making the announcement ICS secretary Gerry Arathoon said, "The exams have been cancelled. The alternative assessment criteria will be announced soon."

In its official order, ICS has said, "The results will be processed on a mechanism which will also include the internal examinations conducted by the schools. The schools will be informed in due course of time, of this mechanism."

The board had already postponed class 12 exams which were scheduled from May 4 in light of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and a week ago it had asked its affiliated schools to submit data, including the average of marks obtained by Class 12 students in Class 11 and during this session.

The cancellation of exams by both the national board now has come as a major relief to students, parents and teachers who were worried about the health of the students in such a situation, where the pandemic is yet to be tackled.
