India logs 42,015 new COVID-19 cases and 3,998 deaths in 24 hours

NEW DELHI: India reported 42,015 new COVID-19 cases and 3,998 deaths while 36,977 patients recovered during the last 24 hours, according to an update from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

While the recovery rate has increased to 97.36 per cent, the daily positivity rate is at 2.27 per cent - less than 3 per cent for 30 straight days in a major sigh of relief. This is some positive news considering that as per World Health Organisation (WHO) COVID-19 positivity rate below 5 per cent is to be within the safe zone.

In terms of vaccination that is being undertaken across the country, India administered more than 34,25,446 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours, taking cumulative vaccination coverage to 41,54,72,455 (41.55 crores) vaccine doses have been administered through 51,36,590 sessions till 7 am today.

According to the update, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases has now climbed to 3,12,16,337. The ministry also said that Maharashtra has carried out its 14th reconciliation exercise of Covid data in the state, as a result of which, the state's positive case tally has increased by 2,479 while the death tally has increased by 3,509.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20 lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. The grim milestone of 2 crores was crossed on May 4 and on June 23 it went past the 3 crore mark.
