Mumbai's raped and tortured victim dies in hospital

MUMBAI: A 32-year-old woman, a street dweller who was raped and brutally tortured inside a parked tempo in Mumbai's Sakinaka suburbs in the early hours of Friday has died while being treated at civic-run Rajawadi hospital here in Mumbai.

The doctors treating her said that apart from the brutal rape, the woman had suffered very server injures to her private parts and some of her organs had spilled out due to the fatal assault  (probably with a sharp object like an iron rod) and after about 28 hours on the ventilator she died without even regaining consciousness.

According to the police, they got the information about the assault at about 3.30 am by security guards who had heard the woman scream from inside the tempo and within ten minutes they had reached the spot and immediately rushed the woman to the hospital.

Meanwhile taking stock of the situation the Sakinaka police station formed several teams and fanned in the area to nab the culprit. CCTV footage from the area were scanned and although very sketchy they were able to get some leads and identified the suspect as a man identified by some as a tempo driver who lived on the steets of the area.

Having identified the suspect the teams raided several locations and withn a few hours, they found him holled up in the nearby Kurla area and arrested him. The accused has been identified as Mohan Chouhan (45), hailing from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh and has family members living in Mumbai, however, he has been abandoned by them due to his vices like drugs and alcohol addiction. Apparently, he is married and has two children, however, his wife has disowned him.

Chauhan has been arrested under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 376 (rape) along with 323 for voluntarily causing hurt and 504 for insulting and provocating with an intention to commit an offencse. The police are conducting further probes as to his criminal background and if he has committed any other crimes in the past.

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has condemned the shameful incident calling it, a 'Disgrace to humanity' and 'highly condemnable' and said that the harshest punishemnet will be sought in a fast track court.

The CM's office tweeted, "The case will be tried on fast track & the culprit will be severely punished, ensuring justice to the woman who lost her life due to this dreadful crime. Officials are directed to speed up investigation."

Thackeray has also said, "We have to present a classic example of speedy justice so that no one will dare to do such an henious thing again."
