SC raps farmers' body for roadblocks, says 'You have strangled the city'

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today raped the farmers' group protesting against the three agricultural laws saying that they have "strangulated the entire city of Delhi, blocked highways and now wanted to come inside the city."

A bench of the apex court of Justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar came down strongly while hearing the plea by the farmers' body, Kisan Mahapanchayat, that had sought permission from the Supreme Court to hold a 'Satyagraha' at Jantar Mantar, the designated protest site in the heart of Delhi.

"You have strangulated the entire city, now you want to come inside the city. The residents around, are they happy with the protest? This business should stop," a bench

Justice Khanwilkar said, "You block highways and then say the protest is peaceful. Citizens also have their right to move around. Their properties are being damaged. You are affecting security also. You stopped defence personnel also."

The Supreme Court told the group that once they have approached the court against the three farm laws, they should have trust in the judicial system and let the matter be decided.

The court asked the petitioners, "If you have faith in courts, pursue that for urgent hearing instead of protesting. Are you protesting against the judicial system also?"

Advocate Ajay Choudhary, the lawyer representing the farmers' body told the Supreme Court said that Kisan Mahapanchayat were not part of protesters blocking highways, however, the police has detained them there. On this, the court asked them to file an affidavit after which it would look into their petition.

The bench posted the matter for hearing on October 4 and asked the petitioners to file an affidavit through e-mail declaring that they are not part of the protest.

Farmer groups have been protesting at Delhi's borders for close to a year against the centre's three agricultural laws.
