Congress leaders meet president, demand sacking of MOS Ajay Mishra

NEW DELHI: A delegation of Indian National Congress (Congress) leaders called on President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan and demanded the dismissal of Union Minister of State (MOS) for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra on the backdrop of his son being arrested in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.

High-level leaders Congress like the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, AK Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led by Rahul Gandhi petitioned the President for an 'impartial probe' by two sitting judges of the Supreme Court.

After the meeting, Rahul Gandhi told media persons, "We told the President that the accused's father who is MoS Home, should be removed from the post as a fair probe is not possible in his presence. Likewise, we also demanded inquiry be done by two sitting judges of the Supreme Court,"

In the memorandum that the Congress team gave the President they have said that, as the custodian of the Constitution and the moral compass to the government, he should immediately take actions that were being proposed by them. The party has noted that given the fact that the MOS is being protected by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders considering that they were making conciliatory statements towards him, the situation would not change without the President's intervention.

Gandhi said that the President has given us the assurance that he will discuss the matter with the government today itself.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that since the farmers who lost their near and dear once in the incident cannot come to meet the President, Congress was raising the issues on their behalf.

She said, "Clearly this government is giving the message that if you are a farmer, Dalit, a poor person, or a woman you are not entitled to justice or rule of law however if you are their party member then the law does not apply on them."
