Kangana says India attained freedom in 2014 and 1947 was ‘bheek’

NEW DELHI: Actor Kangana Ranaut who was conferred the Padma Shri earlier this week made a highly controversial remark by saying that India's Independence attained in 1947 was not freedom but "bheek" (alms).

In a 24-second clip of an event organised by a new channel that has now gone viral on social media, Ranaut is heard saying that we got real freedom in 2014, apparently referring to the BJP coming to power in that year.

Targetting the Congress party she said, 'If we get freedom as a 'bheekh', is it even freedom? What the British left behind in the name of Congress...They were the extension of the British...."

The actor's remarks instantly triggered outrage with Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Varun Gandhi being among the first ones to react. He shared the said video of Ranaut on his Twitter handle and wrote in Hindi which translates to, "It is an anti-national act and must be called out as such. To not do so would be a betrayal of all those who shed blood so that today we may stand tall and free as a nation."

Criticizing Ranaut’s remarks, Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh demanded that she should issue a public apology to all Indians because of her statement, and added, "She has not only insulted our freedom movement but also our freedom fighters’ sacrifices,” Vallabh said.

According to Vallabh, such a thing will happen when people who are not deserving of Padma awards are given these honours. "The government of India should take back the prestigious Padma award from such a lady who is insulting Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. If the government is giving her Padma award, it means the government is promoting these kinds of people," Vallabh said.

Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted that, perhaps it appeared that the actor has been given not only to insult our freedom fighters but also for her attempts to malign the Maharashtra government.
