Mumbai mayor's security increased after death threat letter

MUMBAI: Security at the residence of Mayor of Mumbai Kishori Pednekar was increased after she received a letter from an anonymous sender threatening to kill her. 

Maharashtra home minister, Dilip Walse Patil informed the media that the mayor's security has been increased and a probe into the case has been started to look for the sender of the letter. 

Patil said that the police have formed several teams that have been sent to Uran, Kharghar and Panvel in Navi Mumbai and Raigad as part of the investigation.

Pednekar had registered her complaint in the police station soon after receiving the letter and an FIR has been filed against an unidentified person under relevant sections of IPC for criminal intimidation and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

This was the second death threat sent to Pednekar who is a leader of the ruling Shiv Sena in the Mumbai civic body the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation, earlier a man from Gujarat was arrested for giving threats to her on the phone.

Two days ago on December 10, BJP MLA from Maharashtra Ashish Shelar was arrested in a case registered against him for his alleged objectionable remarks about Pednekar, and later released on bail, police officials said on Friday.

A day earlier Pednekar had filed a complaint against Shelar at the Marine Drive police station in south Mumbai over his alleged remarks following which a case under sections 354 A (4) (making sexually coloured remark) and 509 (words or gestures insulting woman's modesty) of the IPC was registered against the former minister.
