In the first Indian casualty, a student from Karnataka was killed in Ukraine's Kharkiv

NEW DELHI: The ongoing shelling by Russian troops in Ukraine has taken a first Indian casualty as an Indian student was killed after being hit by shelling in Kharkiv, the second-largest city in eastern Ukraine which has born the worst brunt of the attacks.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi confirmed the news in a tweet. "With profound sorrow, we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family," he tweeted 

The Indian student has been identified as 21 years old Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar, from Karnataka who was a fourth-year medical student at the Kharkiv National Medical University in Kharkiv was put up at the university hostel. 

Manoj Rajan, Commissioner for Disaster Management, Karnataka has also confirmed the news, he said."We have confirmed from MEA the unfortunate demise of Naveen Shekharappa in Ukraine. He was from Chalageri, Haveri district. He had left for a nearby store to buy something. Later his friend got a call from a local official that he (Naveen) has died."

There are different accounts of his death so far, according to some reports, Naveen was shot dead by Russian soldiers around 10.30 am Ukrainian time today as he was standing in the queue before a grocery shop to buy supplies, some reports say that he was killed in intense shelling when he left for the train station to leave for Lviv to reach the western border

His colleagues at the hostel have however confirmed his passing and have said that his body has been taken to the city hospital but they were not able to visit to get more information.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has reiterated that India was doing all it could to evacuate and airlift Indian students still stuck in Ukrain, has reportedly spoken to the father of Naveen Shekharappa and offered his condolences on the loss of his son.
