Finally, Mumbai gets an IIM, NITIE becomes the Institute of management

MUMBAI: With both houses of parliament giving their nod to the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill 2023 in the ongoing monsoon session, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), based out of Mumbai will be officially getting the new title of Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai (IIM Mumbai). The institute will begin admission for the 2024-26 batch of IIM courses.

With the rechristening of NITIE as IIM Mumbai, Maharashtra now gets its second IIM after IIM Nagpur, which started functioning in 2015 making the state the only of its kind to have two of these prestigious graduate business schools under the Ministry of HRD, to offer Masters in Business Administration (MBA) along with post-graduation courses.

The NITIE campus which will now be the IIM Mumbai campus is located in Powai near Vihar Lake in Mumbai in the vicinity of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai. Although not as sprawling as the latter, it does boast one of the greenest campuses in the country with one of the tallest hostel buildings in the country. Although the IIT campus spreads out over a large area in an irregular way, IIM Mumbai's campus is pristine in the backdrop of the lake earning it the sobriquet, 'God’s Own Campus' among academic circles.

With this NITIE join the illustrious family of globally renowned IIMs celebrating its diamond jubilee year, in the country as the 21st (IIM) is offering pedagogy of global stature since its inception in 1963. With its rare distinction of encompassing the benefits of both, an IIT and now an IIM, Mumbai is set to be a formidable hub of academics and entrepreneurship that will fuel young minds with bold ambitions.

NITIE has been consistently ranked among the top B-schools in India, with more than 60 academicians and around 1,200 students across various programs. As a leader in management education in the country, it is ranked 7th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings for 2023 among Management institutes across India.

While speaking about this professor Manoj Tiwari, Director, NITIE said, "The inclusion of NITIE in IIM Act, 2017 is the result of years of hard work, commitment and collaborative efforts of our facility, administration officials, management members, staff, alumni and students. The acknowledgement underlines our sustained endeavours to achieve academic excellence in the domains of industrial engineering, engineering management and management sciences, and supply chain. It will inspire us to further elevate our academic offerings with deep industry insights and experience."
