Rahul Gandhi demands JPC probe into Adani investing in own shares

MUMBAI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and member of Lok Sabha on Thursday said a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) should probe reports that Adani family associates invested 'hundreds of millions' in the company by two individuals through opaque investment funds based in Mauritius.

Rahul Gandhi who is in Mumbai to attend the two-day meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDAI) a big tent political alliance of 26 political parties led by Congress, launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Narendra Modi government.

Referring to the fresh set of allegations made by some top global financial dailies the Guardian and Financial Times quoting the investigation by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), Rahul Gandhi sought to ask at a press conference if there is a 'relationship' between Adani and Prime Minister Modi, which was affecting the country's global image and its reputation is at stake just before the G20 summit.

Rahul Gandhi said, "I do not know why PM Modi is not allowing an inquiry, what message would it give to the world leaders that would be visiting the G20 summit."

India currently holds the presidency of the influential intergovernmental forum of the world's major developed and developing economies and the G20 leaders' summit is scheduled to be held on September 9 and 10 in New Delhi.

Holding out headlines of the two global newspapers that published the new allegations, Gandhi asked why the Union government and Modi were 'shying away' from probing these 'serious allegations' against Adani and his brother Vinod Adani.

Replying to the question if the alliance partners were in agreement with him on the demand for inquiry on the issue, he said that this is a 'national issue' and no differences within the INDIA alliance over the issue as all opposition parties were together on the matter.

OCCRP claims that two men, Nasser Ali Shaban Ahli and Chang Chung-Ling, have longtime business ties to the Adani family and have also served as directors and shareholders in Group companies and firms associated with Gautam Adani's elder brother Vinod Adani.

The documents OCCRP claims, that the two men spent years buying and selling Adani stock through offshore structures that obscured their involvement and made considerable profits in the process.

Replying on the convening of the special session of Parliament from September 18, Rahul Gandhi said, "I think, it's an indicator of a little panic, the same type of panic that happened when I spoke in Parliament house, the panic that suddenly made them revoke my Parliament membership."
