2 dead, many injured as Dibrugarh Express derails in UP's Gonda

NEW DELHI: Train number 15904, Dibrugarh Express, transiting from Chandigarh to Dibrugarh, derailed at Pikaura between Jhilahi railway station and Gosai Dihwa in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh and according to an NDTV report four passengers have died and 2 are injured as 12 coaches of the trrain including four coaches of the AC compartment were severely affected in the accident. 

The report showed over a dozen bogies are derailed while some boogies have been overturned and panic-stuck passengers were trying to make their way out of the accident site, with some passengers standing on top of overturned boogies. Visuals also showed people including women with children taking out their luggage from the derailed coaches. A passenger who was onboard the train is seen in the report saying, "I had a close shave, glad to be safe. Don't worry I am fine."

However, according to Pankaj Singh, CPRO, North Eastern Railway who spoke to the media as per his initial info, around 4-5 coaches derailed at around 2.37 pm. He said that the medical van of Railways had reached the spot and a rescue operation had been started. An additional railway rescue team is also being dispatched from Gorakhpur and Gonda and a 40-member medical team with 15 ambulances are at the spot and more ambulances are on their way to the accident site. Singh said that several trains on the route are affected and have been diverted to other routes, among others the route of the Katihar-Amritsar Express and Guwahati-Shrimata Vaishnodevi Katra Express has been diverted.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed district authorities to ensure proper treatment for those injured in the accident. In a post on X, the CM office said, “Taking cognizance of the train accident in Gonda district, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the district administration officials to reach the spot and expedite the relief work. The Chief Minister has instructed the officials to immediately take the injured to the hospital and provide them with proper treatment. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, read a post sent out by the chief minister's office.”
