PUNE: Following a public outcry over the swift granting of bail, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pune on Wednesday remanded a 17-year-old youth, allegedly involved in a car accident that claimed two lives, to an observation home until June 5. The JJB had previously granted bail to the teenager on Sunday, just hours after the Porsche Taycan car he was reportedly driving knocked down and killed two IT professionals, Aneesh Awadhiya and his partner Ashwini Koshta, both in their 20s, who were on a motorbike. The board also ordered the youth to write a 300-word essay on road accidents, a decision that drew widespread criticism.
In response to the public's outcry over the board’s seemingly lenient order, the police approached the JJB again, seeking a review. This led to an amendment of the original order. The police also registered a First Information Report against the minor under various IPC sections, including 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering human life), 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety), and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
On Wednesday, the sessions court remanded Vishal Agarwal (50), the minor's father, who was arrested in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, along with two employees of Hotel Black Club, Nitesh Shevani and Jayesh Gavkar, to police custody until May 24. The teenager had allegedly consumed alcohol at Hotel Black Club before the accident.
Additionally, on Saturday, Pune Police arrested Surendra Agarwal, the grandfather of the 17-year-old boy. He was accused of threatening the driver, Gangaram, and coercing him to falsely claim that he was driving the Porsche at the time of the accident. Surendra Agarwal was subsequently remanded to police custody by a local court until May 28.
