NEW DELHI: On Friday, the Rajya Sabha witnessed a tense exchange between Vice President and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan amid significant uproar in the Upper House. During the heated session, Dhankhar criticized the opposition MPs, accusing them of disrespecting the Constitution and democratic principles. He then called on Jaya Amitabh Bachchan to speak, which led to Bachchan objecting to what she described as Dhankhar’s "unacceptable" tone towards her, demanding an apology.
Expressing her displeasure, Bachchan said, "I, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, want to say that as an artist, I understand body language and expressions. I'm sorry, but your tone is not acceptable. We are colleagues, and you may be sitting on the Chair..." Dhankhar criticized Bachchan, accusing her of lacking decorum and shirking her responsibilities by walking away. He further accused the opposition of attempting to destabilize the nation and stressed the importance of maintaining proper conduct in Parliament.
Bachchan, however, stood by her criticism of Dhankhar’s tone, insisting on the need for mutual respect and decorum in Parliament, and reiterated her demand for an apology. In response, the opposition MPs staged a walkout in protest.
This incident follows a similar confrontation earlier in the week when Bachchan objected to Dhankhar addressing her by her full name, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, dismissing it as a "new drama" in Parliament. While expressing pride in her husband’s accomplishments, Bachchan voiced her discomfort with women’s identities being linked to their husbands' names.
