MUMBAI: In a significant development in Indian political security, veteran politician Sharad Pawar has been granted Z-category security cover by the Union Home Ministry. This decision comes in light of escalating concerns over the safety of the 83-year-old veteran Nationalist Congress Party - Sharad Pawar (NCP-SP) leader, particularly amidst rising political tensions and threats directed towards prominent figures in the region.
A threat assessment review by Central agencies has recommended a strong security cover for Pawar, and thus the government decided to enhance his security, which is seen as a necessary measure following intelligence inputs that suggested potential threats to his life. Sharad Pawar, who has played a pivotal role in Maharashtra's political landscape for over five decades, has been a vocal critic of various government policies and has consistently advocated for regional interests.
The Z-category security cover includes a contingent of armed commandos who will accompany Pawar at all times. This level of protection is typically reserved for individuals who face serious threats and requires a comprehensive security detail. The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising the government for prioritizing the safety of political leaders, while others criticize it as an overreach.
As per the directive by the Union Home Ministry, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been asked to extend the cover, and a team of 55 armed CRPF personnel has been earmarked for the task. The Centre has accorded him Z-plus cover to be protected by the CRPF VIP security wing, sources said. A CRPF team is already in Maharashtra to take up the task, they said. The VIP security cover categorizations begin from the highest Z+ followed by Z, Y+, Y, and X.
Political analysts suggest that this decision may also reflect the broader climate of fear among politicians in the country, as several leaders have reported receiving threats in recent months. The protection of political figures like Pawar is crucial for maintaining the democratic fabric of the nation, as it ensures that dissenting voices are not silenced by fear.
NCP-SP leaders have welcomed the decision to provide the veteran leader with enhanced security cover. Earlier this week, Sharad Pawar took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address in which the latter pitched for 'one nation, one election'. Modi had said frequent elections were creating hurdles in the progress of the nation and asserted "the country has to come forward for one nation, one election".
