PM Modi celebrates 10 years of Jan Dhan Yojana, lauds the financial inclusion scheme

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing financial inclusion across India. Launched in 2014, the scheme has successfully opened over 53 crore bank accounts, with 30 crore women directly benefitting from its provisions, highlighting its significant impact on women's empowerment and financial independence.

In his address, PM Modi emphasized that 55.6% of the account holders are women, showcasing the initiative's role in integrating women into the formal banking system. This achievement is especially remarkable given that, prior to the scheme, many households, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, lacked access to banking services.

The Prime Minister noted that the Jan Dhan Yojana has not only facilitated financial inclusion but has also provided dignity and access to essential financial services for marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).

"Since its inception, the Jan Dhan Yojana has enabled direct transfers amounting to nearly Rs 39 lakh crore, significantly reducing the need for intermediaries and enhancing transparency in the distribution of government benefits," he said adding that the scheme has been instrumental in the government's broader welfare initiatives, allowing for seamless transfers under various programs aimed at uplifting the economically disadvantaged.

Reflecting on the journey of the Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Modi also spoke about the initial scepticism and challenges faced during its launch. However, he celebrated the scheme's evolution into a game-changer for millions, particularly women, who now enjoy greater control over their finances. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also echoed these sentiments, praising the initiative for its role in transforming India's development trajectory.
