NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was granted bail and walked out of prison after six months, today made a surprise announcement that he would resign from the post of CM. Kejriwal's announcement came during his first address in front of party workers where he said, his resignation would come in the next 48 hours which if it happens will be on September 17, which incidentally is the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing party workers he said, "Two days later, I will resign as Chief Minister. I will not sit on that chair till the people announce their verdict. Elections in Delhi are months away. I got justice from the legal court, now I will get justice from the people's court. I will sit on the Chief Minister's chair only after the order of the people." In the same address, Kejriwal also demanded fresh polls in Delhi and has also asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold Delhi polls at the same time as Maharashtra Legislative Assembly polls scheduled later this year.
"I want to ask the people of Delhi, is Kejriwal innocent or guilty? If I have worked, vote for me," he said, adding that a meeting of AAP MLAs will be held within the next two days to choose the new Chief Minister for the national capital.
He also attacked the opposition led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that it was attempting to arrest and send to jail CMs of the states where it lost elections. "The BJP has a new formula now, they file cases against the CM of opposition parties in the states where they lost elections. They have filed cases against Siddaramaiah, and Pinarayi Vijayan," he said.
Reacting to the CM's announcement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harish Khurana claimed that Kejriwal was doing drams. Khurana questioned him by asking, "Why after 48 hours? He should resign today. In the past too, he has done this. People of Delhi are asking, he can't go to the secretariat, can't sign documents? What is the point then?"
He also said that the BJP was ready for early polls if announced, Khurana said, "We are ready, whether it is today or tomorrow. We will return to power in Delhi after 25 years."
