Kejriwal quits, Atishi Marlena new chief minister of Delhi

NEW DELHI: Minister of Education, Atishi Marlena a prominent leader in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was officially appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, following the resignation of outgoing CM Arvind Kejriwal amid ongoing political challenges and allegations of corruption.

This significant transition marks a historic moment as Atishi becomes the third woman to hold this prestigious office after Sushma Swaraj of the  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sheila Dikshit of the Congress Party.

A statement from AAP said, "Atishi steps up to lead Delhi until the upcoming elections, carrying the weight of both CM Arvind Kejriwal’s vision and the national capital’s future."

Atishi's appointment comes at a critical time for the party and the capital, as it seeks to maintain stability in governance. Kejriwal's resignation was largely attributed to his recent arrest related to bribery allegations, prompting the party to look for new leadership to navigate the turbulent political landscape. The party has termed his arrest as a 'political conspiracy' orchestrated by the BJP on the behest of the prime minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders.

In her first statements as Chief Minister, Atishi expressed her commitment to addressing pressing issues in Delhi, including infrastructure improvements and public safety measures. She highlighted the tragic building collapse that resulted in multiple fatalities as a catalyst for her administration's focus on enhancing safety regulations throughout the city.

However, Atishi's appointment has not been without controversy. Opposition leaders, including Swati Maliwal, have criticized the choice, branding her a "dummy CM" and questioning her qualifications for the role. In response, Atishi has defended her capabilities and the integrity of her party's decision-making process, emphasizing her dedication to the people of Delhi.

As she steps into her new role, Atishi aims to continue the educational reforms that have been a hallmark of AAP's governance. Her leadership is expected to prioritize transparency and accountability in government operations, addressing the concerns raised by the public and opposition alike.

Atishi's rise to the position of Chief Minister represents a pivotal change in Delhi's leadership, and her administration will be closely monitored as it seeks to tackle the challenges ahead while navigating the complexities of the political environment.
