Noel Tata appointed new chairman of Tata Trusts, vows to uphold legacy

MUMBAI: Noel Tata has been appointed as the new chairman of Tata Trusts, succeeding his half-brother Ratan Tata, who passed away on October 9 at the age of 86. The decision was unanimously made during a board meeting held in Mumbai on October 11, marking a significant transition for one of India's most influential business and philanthropic organizations that holds a 66% stake in Tata Sons, the parent company of the Tata Group that holds the bulk of shares of the Group.
Indian-born Irish businessman, Noel is the son of Naval Tata and Simone Tata, and at 67 years old, Noel Tata brings over 40 years of experience within the Tata Group, holding key positions including Chairman of Trent and Voltas, and serving on the boards of several other Tata companies. His extensive background in the conglomerate positions him well to lead the Trusts, which play a crucial role in funding various social initiatives across India.
In his first statement as chairman, Noel expressed his commitment to continuing the legacy of Ratan Tata and the founding principles of the Tata Group. "I look forward to carrying on the legacy of Mr. Ratan N. Tata and the Founders of the Tata Group. Founded more than a century ago, the Tata Trusts are a unique vehicle for undertaking social good," he stated. He emphasized the Trusts' dedication to developmental and philanthropic efforts, reaffirming their mission to contribute positively to society.
Noel Tata's appointment comes at a pivotal time as the Tata Trusts oversee a substantial portion of the Tata Group's philanthropic activities, which include education, healthcare, and rural development. The Trusts are known for their significant contributions to various sectors, reflecting the Tata Group's long-standing commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Noel is married to Aloo Mistry, the daughter of Pallonji Mistry, who was the single largest shareholder in Tata Sons (the Tata Group's holding company) and they have three children, eldest daughter, Leah Tata who is is a vice-president at the Indian Hotels Company Limited, a Tata hospitality arm, second daughter Maya Tata a board member of the Tata Medical Center Trust and son, Neville Tata currently heading the Star Bazaar.
