Bengaluru inundated due to heavy rains; one dead in building collapse

BENGALURU: Bengaluru, India’s bustling IT hub, has been severely impacted by torrential rains over the past few days, leading to widespread flooding with several areas submerged under knee-deep water.

North Bengaluru has particularly borne the brunt of the rains, with areas in and around Yelahanka severely flooded. According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Yelahanka received 157 mm (about six inches) of rain in just six hours from midnight to 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Several school and college buildings, including Kendriya Vihar in Yelahanka, were inundated with waist-deep water due to the heavy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts, advising residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Teams from BBMP, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to assist in rescue operations.

Amid the heavy rains, an under-construction building collapsed in Babusapalya earlier today, killing one worker. About 17 others are feared trapped inside the building as SDRF, NDRF, and the fire department have launched a rescue operation at the site.

The heavy downpour has led to severe waterlogging, making commuting a nightmare for residents. Major roads like Tumakuru Road, Old Madras Road, and Kanakapura Road, along with key junctions like Silk Board and Old Madras Road, have been particularly affected, causing massive traffic jams and disrupting daily life. Ballari Road, which leads to Kempegowda International Airport, was severely congested for several kilometers.

The rains have also damaged household items, vehicles, and electronics, adding to residents' woes. Schools have been closed, and many people have missed flights, trains, and buses due to severe flooding. The situation remains critical, with ongoing efforts to evacuate stranded residents and provide relief to those affected.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has assured residents that all possible measures are being taken to manage the situation. He emphasized the importance of staying indoors and avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary.
