‘Loveyapa’ a breezy take on romance, feels mediocre and lackluster

MUMBAI: Loveyapa, a romantic comedy directed by Advait Chandan and starring Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan in their Bollywood debuts, is a remake of the 2022 Tamil film Love Today. The movie explores the challenges of modern relationships in the digital age.

The story revolves around Gaurav 'Gucci' Sachdeva (Junaid Khan) and Baani Sharma (Khushi Kapoor), a young couple deeply in love but equally attached to their phones. When Baani’s strict father, Atul Kumar Sharma (Ashutosh Rana), challenges them to swap phones for a day to test their trust, chaos ensues as they uncover each other’s hidden secrets and undisclosed social media accounts.

The film addresses contemporary issues like body-shaming, social media manipulation, and deepfakes, making it relatable to a younger audience. Ashutosh Rana delivers a standout performance as the stern father, while Kiku Sharda impresses as Gaurav’s brother-in-law. The supporting cast adds depth and humor to the narrative, with Grusha Kapoor playing Gaurav’s mother and Tanvika Parlikar as Gaurav’s sister.

However, the chemistry between Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor is shallow and underwhelming. Their performances feel mismatched at times, and the lack of depth in their characterizations leaves the audience without any excitement to look forward to. The narrative feels overextended, with the first half focusing on Baani’s secrets and the second half on Gucci’s. Some scenes and dialogues come across as heavy-handed and predictable.

Loveyapa is a breezy take on romance in the digital era, with a mix of humour and social commentary. While it has its flaws, the film’s relevant themes and strong cast may make it a worthwhile watch for younger audiences. It’s a film that might appeal to those looking for a casual, entertaining watch, but it lacks the emotional depth and chemistry needed to make it truly memorable.

The film has however failed to attract a large audience at the cinemas. Upon its release on February 7, 2025, Loveyapa had a modest start, earning approximately Rs 1.33 crore on its opening day. The following day, the film’s earnings increased to around Rs 2.31 crore, bringing the total to about Rs 3.9 crore by the third day.
