Mamata Banerjee rules out alliance with Congress for 2026 Bengal assembly polls

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decisively ruled out the possibility of forming an alliance with the Congress for the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. Addressing Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmakers ahead of the Assembly's budget session, Banerjee emphasized that her party is fully capable of securing a two-thirds majority on its own. She confidently stated, "We alone are enough," underlining the TMC's self-reliance in its bid for a fourth consecutive term.

Banerjee criticized the Congress for its failure to support the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi and AAP's refusal to ally with the Congress in Haryana, a situation she believes led to BJP victories in both states. She reiterated that the TMC does not need any alliances to win in Bengal, affirming once again, "We alone are enough."

The TMC leader also cautioned her party members to stay vigilant against potential attempts by the BJP to manipulate the voter list by adding names of foreigners. She revealed plans to reorganize the party structure, from the state level down to the booth level, and urged legislators to propose names for various positions.

Banerjee's statement highlights the TMC's strategic decision to contest the 2026 elections independently, marking a clear departure from the possibility of alliances with Congress. This move reflects the TMC's confidence in its organizational strength and voter base within the state. In related developments, the TMC has also distanced itself from the Left parties, including the CPI(M), signalling a preference for an independent electoral race.

The upcoming assembly elections are crucial for the TMC, as it aims to secure a fourth consecutive term in power. The party's decision to go solo is expected to have significant implications for the political dynamics of West Bengal.
