Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis rides a bike, DCM Eknath Shinde opts for EV
MUMBAI: In a visible response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated call for austerity and simplicity in public life, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his ministerial colleagues showcased modest travel choices on Wednesday, drawing widespread attention across the state.
CM Devendra Fadnavis surprised onlookers by arriving at a state government function riding a classic Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle. The Chief Minister, known for his dynamic image, waved to citizens as he rode through the streets of Mumbai, emphasising a connect with common people and a conscious shift away from lavish official vehicles.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde opted for an electric vehicle (EV) for his daily commute, aligning with both the Centre’s push for green mobility and the austerity drive. Several other Maharashtra ministers were seen walking short distances to their respective offices and meetings, abandoning luxury cars for the day.
The move comes days after Prime Minister Modi, during his recent interactions, urged ministers and senior officials across the country to adopt simpler lifestyles, reduce unnecessary expenditure, and lead from the front in promoting sustainability and fiscal discipline. PM Modi had emphasised that public representatives must reflect the values of “less government, more governance” and environmental consciousness.
Speaking to reporters, CM Fadnavis said, “Austerity is not just a slogan. It is a mindset. When the Prime Minister is stressing the need for simplicity, we in Maharashtra are committed to walking the talk. Whether it is riding a Bullet or choosing an EV, the message is clear — we are here to serve the people, not to display power.”
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde echoed similar sentiments, stating that adopting electric vehicles supports both the environment and the ‘Make in India’ initiative for EVs. “This is a small step towards reducing our carbon footprint and cutting unnecessary costs,” he added.
The symbolic gestures have received mixed reactions. While many citizens and party workers appreciated the humility shown by the top leadership, some opposition leaders termed it a “photo-op” and questioned the sincerity behind such moves. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray’s camp called it “selective austerity,” pointing out that grand government schemes and projects continue as usual.
Political observers, however, view this as a strategic move by the Mahayuti government to counter criticism of being a “high-command driven” alliance and to build a narrative of people-centric governance ahead of upcoming civic polls.
The development also highlights the growing emphasis on sustainable mobility in Maharashtra, a state that has been aggressively promoting electric vehicles through various policy incentives.
This austerity drive by Maharashtra ministers is expected to inspire similar actions in other states and reinforce the BJP-led government’s image of being responsive to PM Modi’s vision of a developed yet disciplined India.
