IMD says rain likely in Thane on May 18
MUMBAI: After days of intense heat and humidity, residents of Thane are expected to receive significant relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in the city and surrounding areas on May 18.
According to the latest weather update, a trough of low pressure over the Arabian Sea is likely to trigger pre-monsoon showers across parts of Maharashtra, including Thane, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Palghar districts. Meteorologists have predicted that the rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, could bring down daytime temperatures by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, offering much-needed comfort to citizens battling the early summer heatwave.
In the past week, Thane recorded maximum temperatures hovering between 36°C and 39°C, with high humidity making conditions feel even more oppressive. Many residents, especially senior citizens, outdoor workers, and school children, have been severely affected by the scorching weather. Local hospitals reported a rise in heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and exhaustion.
"The rain will be a blessing," said Ashok Dhabade, a resident of Ghodbunder Road. "The heat has been unbearable. Even simple tasks like stepping out for groceries have become difficult. We are eagerly waiting for the showers."
The anticipated rainfall is also expected to provide relief to the agricultural sector in the peripheral areas of Thane district. Farmers, who were worried about delayed pre-monsoon activity affecting standing crops, welcomed the forecast. However, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, cautioning citizens about possible waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, and fallen trees due to strong winds.
Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has already activated its monsoon preparedness teams. Deputy Commissioner of TMC, Sandeep Mhatre, said, "We have cleared major drains and are on high alert. Citizens are advised to avoid low-lying areas and not to step out unless necessary during heavy spells."
Environmental experts view this early rainfall as a positive sign of the approaching southwest monsoon. However, they also warn that such erratic weather patterns could become more frequent due to climate change.
As Thane gears up for the showers, local authorities have urged residents to stay updated through official weather apps and avoid areas prone to flooding. Schools and colleges in the region may declare partial holidays or shift to online classes if the rain intensifies.
This timely rain is expected to lower the heat index significantly and bring a much-awaited break from the oppressive weather, giving residents a chance to breathe easy on May 18.
