Sharp drop in COVID-19 testing figures in Mumbai during Diwali weekend worrisome

There is a strong sense of worry and concern in the Maharashtra state govt's COVID-19 Task Force team as they find an alarming drop in COVID-19 testing numbers, especially during the festive weekend of Diwali.

As per figures available from the state COVID-19 monitoring team of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), testing numbers saw a sudden drop of up to 72% during the long festive period in Mumbai this month.

While about 14,000 tests were done on November 5, this figures has dropped below 4,000 at 3918 tests done on November 15.  According to the figures posted on the BMC dashboard, only 5,399 tests were conducted in Mumbai on Diwali last Saturday.

This sharp decline has got not only the administration and the doctors of the COVID-19 Task Force, but by doctors who are involved in treating patients of different ailments. Dr Nitin Jain who is an

intensivist at a multispecialty tertiary care facility, this issue was very concerning especially since it will spurt the infection among people who were going about as if the infection is no longer a concern.

"Testing, tracing, and treatment, this protocol is and should be adhered to very strictly," Dr Jain said adding that large crowds in all major shopping areas like Dadar etc, without adhering to COVID-19 precaution was like a ticking bomb.

Maharashtra Deputy CM, Ajit Pawar has also expressed deep concern, "There was a huge crowd during Diwali period as if Corona hs died down. Even at the time of Ganesha Chaturthi, we saw crowds. We'll review the situation for next 8-10 days & then the further decision will be taken about the lockdown," Pawar said.
