Both houses of parliament adjourned amid uproar over fuel prices

NEW DELHI: Proceedings of both the houses of Parliament were adjourned several times today following persistent uproar by the opposition over rising fuel prices due to which no legislative business could be transacted.

Both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha met for the first time in the second part of the Budget Session and almost immediately as the houses assembled, the opposition parties made it clear that they would not let the houses function unless the issue of rising fuel prices were discussed.

Leader of the Opposition in the upper house, Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge gave a notice for suspension of business for Monday and demanded a discussion on the rise in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG even when global prices were at all-time low levels, however, the chairman Venkaiah Naidu disallowed the discussion, saying the issue can be discussed during the course of discussion on the Appropriation Bill.

The opposition members began shouting slogans and Kharge continued his demand describing the issue as a 'burning subject' and said that people are agitating across the country. "Petrol was touching Rs 100 and diesel Rs 80 per litre, while LPG rates have increased and prices of petroleum products have gone up and the common man is suffering," Kharge said claiming that there been nearly 820 per cent increase in the prices of petrol and around 258 per cent in excise duty after 2014.

As members ignored the repeated pleas by Naidu and continued to shout, the first adjournment in Rajya Sabha was done around 10.05 am till 11 am and again till 1 pm and then two quick adjournments of 15 minutes each, before the house was adjourned for the day.

Meanwhile the lower house, Lok Sabha was also adjourned several times in the day, it was first adjourned till 12 pm, but since opposition Members continued raising slogans it was further adjourned till 2 pm, however, when the House reassembled at 2 pm, and opposition members insisted on a discussion on fuel price hike and the house was adjourned for the day.
