COVID-19 cases fall below the 1,000 mark in Mumbai after 2 months

MUMBAI: At 953 new COVID-19 cases reported on Tuesday from Mumbai, it is for the first time since March 2 that the city has reported less than 1,000 fresh infections in a span of 24 hours with 44 fatalities. A day earlier on Monday, the financial capital of the country had logged 1,240 new cases and 48 fatalities.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said with Tuesday's cases, the tally of total cases has gone up to 6,90,889 and the death toll to 14,352.

Mumbai had recorded 849 COVID-19 cases, on March 2, after which daily infections surged very fast to four-digit figures.

A fact however remains that the number of tests also dropped. Will till the last week, more than 20,000 samples were being tested in the city daily on Monday however BMC data shows that 17,920 tests were conducted since Monday evening, (a considerable decrease in the number) taking the overall tally of tests to 59,34,165.

According to BMC figures, recoveries has outnumbered the new infections on Tuesday, which reduced the number of active COVID-19 cases to 32,925. As many as 2,258 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered patients to 6,41,598. The city's recovery rate is now 93 per cent.

Meanwhile in the state of Maharashtra, which consistently reported over 60,000 cases last month, logged 28,438 Covid cases on Tuesday. Pune remains the worst-hit city in the state with 3,795 cases and 24 deaths in a day, followed by Nashik with 2,246 cases and 37 deaths.

As far as the all India number of positive daily cases were concerned the tally has dropped to 2.63 lakh on Tuesday however it also recorded its highest ever one-death spike in death count, registering 4,329 fatalities in 24 hours.
