Biden attempt to assert US world leadership depends on Russia and China more than Europe

NEW DELHI: In a fresh attempt to assert the global financial, trade supremacy of the United States in the Corona Covid 19 -hit planet of the Earth, its new and 45th President, Joe Biden is on 8 days fast tour of the European allies clubbed in the industrialised' Group of Seven' (G-7) and still lasting World War military construct of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) newly constructed headquarters building in Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. In his current foreign visit, Biden is to personally meet as many as 35 world leaders.

Biden plans to donate 500 million doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine globally. “America will be the arsenal of vaccines in our fight against Covid-19, just as America was the arsenal of democracy during World War II", Biden said after reaching Britain.

President Biden in the first overseas tour along with spouse Jill Biden, about five months after putting his administration from the White House in Washington DC in order following a very long bitter fight against the Republican Party's incumbent President Donald Trump, is now in the focus on the global community.

The US Presidential elections witnessed even a violent attack by the Trump supporters on the Capitol Hill, housing the US Parliament chambers of Senate and the House of Representatives.

Noam Chomsky, a nonagenarian linguist and thinker said during the US elections that Trump is a ' sociopath ' like Germany's fallen dictator Adolf Hitler, seized only with his personal wellbeing and was, therefore, not fit at all for world leadership. Trump claimed China was responsible for the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus leaked from its huge virology lab in Wuhan city and sought to lead the world against this new pandemic of the new millennium by lining up in his support the US economic and military allies.

Barring France, almost all the US allies supported Trump's bald contentions made without substantiations convincing to the scientists. France held the view China hasn't deliberately leaked the said virus from its research lab. China lambasted such accusations, saying it was a victim itself and is working responsibly to find out how best to control it.

Trump had certain political motives behind his China bashing as he openly wished to justify his accusation in the US Presidential elections debate that it was a biological strategic attack on the US for its financial and trade leadership in the post-world war arrangements. Trump went to the extent of claiming China was meddling in the US domestic affairs by supporting his Democratic party rival Biden through a large number of immigrants and other US citizens of China - origin.

To mobilise his support base among the conservative geographies in the US, Trump called Biden a China agent and claimed if he wins China will control the US.

Trump said no such thing even once about India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had publicly extended support to Trump in the US elections with an adaptation of a Hindi slogan, 'Ab ki baar Trump Sarkar '. This was copy of the Bharatiya Janata Party's elections slogan' Ab ki Baar Modi Sarkar, in the 2014 and also in the 2019 general Parliamentary elections in India.

The first case of Covid 19 infection on the US soil was reported on 20 January 2020, 10 days before it was found in India.

Like the unscientific approach of Modi in India, who in the face of pandemic gave a call of ' Thali Bajao Batti Gul Karo' meaning clapping, utensil beating and putting off domestic lights in the evening hours on a fixed day to the people to defeat Corona, Trump too suggested consumption of insecticide Lysol to come over with virus infections.

Trump also locked horns with the United Nations agency of the World Health Organisation ( WHO) and threatened to cut its funding.

According to some diplomatic observers, due to Trump's whimsical ways of, the US relations with its allies like France and others has also deteriorated and now it's for Biden to go for course corrections before attempting to make the US say acceptable to the world community. As if acknowledging this observation Biden said at the very start of his tour that it was a message to both China and Russia that US relations with Europe are strong.

Apart from the US, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan and Canada are the G- 7 member countries. During this G -7 Summit in Britain, President Biden will also hold one-to-one talk with its Prime Minister Boris Jonson. Biden hasn't hidden forefathers’ Irish origin and is said to be not happy with Britain's way of addressing the issues in Ireland, now split into two parts. To a question, ' What are our values? ',  asked by BBC reporter after his election win in November 2020, Biden quipped with a smile, ' I’m Irish.'. Biden’s comment was taken as a reflection of his deep and almost spiritual connection with the land of his forefathers.

Ahead of talks with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the Biden administration made clear its concern at Britain’s feud with the European Union over post-Brexit border arrangements on the island of Ireland. Washington fears that the spat could mess up the genius of the ' 1998 Good Friday Agreement’ that ended 30 years of sectarian violence and effectively made the frontier between the North and Ireland invisible. This agreement, which came after about two decades of violence killing hundreds of people and traumatizing the Irish community, was supported by Biden.

Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK have left the EU single market while Ireland remains a member causing tensions on the island of Ireland. Johnson, however, insisted on Thursday that the US and UK were incomplete “harmony” on Northern Ireland and the need to protect the Good Friday Agreement.

Biden along with his spouse will  meet Queen Elizabeth II this Sunday,  whose spouse,   King Philip passed away recently.

Before winding up his foreign tour after bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Geneva in Switzerland on June 16 he will address the NATO summit at its headquarters in Brussels. NATO, as of now has 30 member countries, including the US, Britain, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland,  Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Netherlands and Portugal.

History books say Portugal is the oldest colonial power whose monarchs had substantially funded Cristopher Columbus' voyage to discover a new sea route to India to monopolise global trading of its masalas. Columbus, however, mistakenly discovered America.

Modi is no were in his foreign visit and there is no immediate plan for Trump' visit to India and Modi's visit to the US. India's two Boeing 777 ER aircraft purchased at a whopping cost of 640 million dollars, for its President and PM travel, reportedly have not gone abroad.

In fact,  PM Modi has not gone abroad this year so far. His Bangladesh visit in March this year to participate in the birth centenary of its father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was cancelled due to domestic compulsions caused by the new wave of pandemic

With more than 7 billion, mostly unvaccinated, people in the world, the US will, however, need to  expand that arsenal in cooperation with other countries, specially China and Russia and India as well, to truly claim world leadership in the fight against the pandemic.
