Four killed, dozen injured in a house collapse in Mumbai suburbs

MUMBAI: Four persons of the same family were killed and nearly a dozen others suffered injuries after a single-storey house collapsed in the Shivaji Nagar area of Govandi in eastern Mumbai.
According to the police officials, the names of those who may have died on the spot are Neha Parvez (35) and Mokar Shaikh (80) while the names of two others who succumbed to injuries at the state-run Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar are Shamshad Shaikh (45) and Farhin Shaikh (22). Some injured have also been admitted to the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion.
According to eyewitnesses, the dead were from the building which was adjacent to the one that collapsed since the buildings are in close proximity to each other. They also claim that these buildings are illegal and are built without the proper foundation being laid thereby being vulnerable to heavy rains and winds during monsoons.
Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra have been witnessing very heavy rains due to which life has been thrown out of gear as heavy rainfall continues. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heavy rainfall would continue for the next 48 hours in Mumbai and adjoining areas.
Earlier today, at least five people died in the landslides that occurred in Maharashtra's Raigad district. Several regions of Maharashtra, including Ratnagiri, Satara, Kolhapur have been ravaged by incessant rainfall.
The Konkan coast of Maharashtra has been worst affected and the coastal town of Chiplun in Ratnagiri (As seen above), around 250 km from Mumbai, battles devastating rain and flooding being among the worst-affected.
