Court allows plea by Rhea Chakraborty to de-freeze account reclaim laptop and phone

MUMBAI: After almost 14 months actress Rhea Chakraborty will be able to access her bank account, fixed deposits and her electronic gadgets which had been frozen by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) which is investigating the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput death case.

A special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court today allowed her plea on an indemnity bond of Rs 1 lakh on condition that she will not sell or discard her mobile phone or laptop till the investigation is over.

Special NDPS judge DB Mane said that he was allowing her plea since NCB did not strongly object to it in the court although the agency through special public prosecutor Atul Sarpande had pleaded against unfreezing her bank account. He had submitted that the financial investigation in the case was going on.

The court however laid down the condition that Chakraborty will also need to maintain a balance in her account which was available as of September 16, 2020, for passing necessary orders, as and when required.

Chakraborty and her brother Showik were arrested by the NCB in September last year for having facilitated the procurement of drugs for consumption by Rajput, along with a dozen other drug peddlers.  They were latter granted bail by the Bombay High Court.

On 14 June 2020, Indian actor Rajput was found dead, hanging from the ceiling fan at his home in the Bandra area of Mumbai and Mumbai police began its investigation. On 25 July, Rajput's father, K. K. Singh, filed an FIR at Patna, against Chakraborty and six others, including her family members, for abetment of suicide.

Two months later on 6 August, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), re-registered the Patna Police FIR accusing Chakraborty, Showik and others of wrongdoing, thus taking over the case. A few weeks later NCB also registered an FIR against the same accused and later arrested them.
