Rajya Sabha chairman Naidu refuses to revoke MPs' suspension

NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu today refused to revoke the suspension of the 12 member of parliaments (MPs) justifying it saying they haven't shown any remorse for their act of sacrilege of the house in the previous Monsoon Session in August.

At the beginning of the session today, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) M Mallikarjun Kharge made a strong appeal to revoke the suspensions, however, Naidu rejected his plea and refused to revoke the MP's suspension.

Cutting shot LoP's arguments on the revocation of the suspension Naidu said, "You try to mislead the House, you disturb the House, you ransacked the table, you also threw papers on the chair and also some of them have got on to the table and then you are giving me lessons."

"I don't think the appeal of the Leader of the Opposition is worth considering. I am not considering it at all," Naidu added.

A dozen members of the opposition parties in Rajya Sabha were suspended from the ongoing winter session on the very first day yesterday following a motion brought in by the government, for alleged unruly conduct where opposition members stormed the well of the house during the passage of the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021.

The motion which was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, was passed by voice vote even as the opposition protested it overwhelmingly calling it undemocratic. The suspended MPs include six from the Congress, two each from Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena, and one each from CPI and CPM.

Naidu also rejected Kharge's contentions that action on any development of last sessions cannot be taken in the current one, saying that the chairman of the House is empowered to suspend members for unruly conduct under rules 256, 259, 266 and other residuary powers.

After Naidu refused to entertain any further discussion on the topic, the entire opposition parties staged a walkout from Rajya Sabha leaving only the treasury benches in the house.
