Hathras Case: CBI charges all four accused of gang-rape and murder

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed its charge sheet in the Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras rape case in which a 19 years old Dalit girl was allegedly raped on September 14 and has charged all the four accused of gang-rape and murder.

The charge sheet were filed by the central agency in the Hathras District court under various sections of IPC including 354, 376 A, 376 D, 302 and under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the four upper caste men Sandeep, Luvkush, Ravi and Ramu who will now stand trial.

The victim young woman was allegedly gang raped by the accused on 14 September 2020 and was left half dead and paralyzed with several injuries including severe spinal cord damage in the fields where she had gone to collect cattle fodder.

The victim was initially admitted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH) on 14 September in Aligarh, however since her condition deteriorated she was moved to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where she passed away on 29 September 2020.

Her family members have claimed that along with sever spinal cord injury, the victim also had her tongue cut off as the perpetrators tried to strangle the girl when she resisted their rape attempt.

They also alleged that the local administration was trying to hush up the case, even claiming that the victim was not raped and they were forced to conduct the victims last rites in the dead of the night near her home.

The attempts of the local administration and the local police to hush the case gathered country wide attention and sparked outrage and massive protests. Facing flak over the handling of the case, the state government recommended CBI probe into the case in October.

During its probe the CBI accessed the initial medico-legal examination report prepared by the JNMCH at Aligarh, where she was first admitted on 14 September which revealed that the victim was raped and excessive force was used during the assault.
