Exit polls give an edge to BJP in UP, AAP in Punjab but a close contest in Goa, U'khand

NEW DELHI: Post exit polls, the familiar predictions of who is winning or losing in elections, have thrown interesting numbers for the just concluded polling in five states of Uttar Pradesh (UP), Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.

While most of the polls have given a clear edge to the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Yogi government in UP to be returning to power with a majority, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) is said to be ousting the Charanjit Singh Channi government and coming to power in Punjab with a majority.

According to INDIA TODAY-AXIS MY INDIA exit poll in UP the BJP is likely to win in between 288-326 seats while the contender Samajwadi Party (SP) may win about 71-101 seats, while they are projecting that the Congress will win about 1-3 seats and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) might win between 3-9 seats.

NEWS 24- TODAYS CHANAKYA exit polls are predicting 294 for BJP, 105 to SP, 1 seat to Congress and 2 to BSP. The TIMES NOW-VETO exit polls have given a prediction of 225 seats for BJP, 151 to SP, 9 for Congress and 14 to BSP while the NEWSX-POLSTRAT exit polls predict that BJP will get about 211-225, SP 146-160, Congress 4-6 and the BSP will bag about 14-24 seats in UP.

For Punjab Arvind Kejriwal led AAP is being projected to win 76-90 seats according to INDIA TODAY-AXIS MY INDIA exit poll, 19-31 seats to Congress, 1-4 seats to BJP and 7-11 seats to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), while NEWS 24- TODAYS CHANAKYA exit polls is predicting 100 seats for AAP, 10 to Congress, 1 for Congress and 6 to SAD.

According to the TIMES NOW-VETO exit polls its prediction in Punjab is 70 seats for AAP, 22 for Congress, 5 to BJP and 19 seats to SAD. NEWSX-POLSTRAT exit polls had a mixed bag as it predicts that AAP will get about 56-61, Congress about 24-29, while BJP may bag about 1-6 seats and SAD may win 22-26 in Punjab.

In Uttarakhand and Goa, both the Congress and the BJP are being favoured by different exit polls to win the assembly elections as main contenders, while in Manipur most exit polls are giving BJP a clean edge winning with a thumping majority while Congress is being predicted to come second with most of the exit polls giving the party plus-minus about one dozen seats.

The main feature of almost all the exit polls seems to be that while Congress is facing pressure in its traditional strongholds, especially in Punjab BSP may become the biggest loser.

Political parties like Congress, SP and BSP have dismissed these exit poll surveys claiming that they are not accurate and out of focus. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the ruling party will be wiped out from the state when the results are declared on March 10.
