Shami, Bumrah and Yadav demolish England, India records sixth win

LUCKNOW: India maintained its unbeaten streak at the 2023 World Cup with a 100-run win in a low-scoring contest against England, who are now looking at an early exit following their fifth beating in six group matches here at Lucknow's Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Batting first after losing the toss, India could score just 229 runs, what many experts said would not have been the most expected total at this wicket.

India's innings began at a very troubled stage, losing three early wickets quite early untill Rohit along with KL Rahul stabilised for the hosts. While Virat Kohli was knocked off for a duck on a delivery by David Willey, Shreyas Iyer was caught by Wood and bowled by Woakes for just 4 and Shubman Gill was knocked off by Chris Woakes for 9.

For India, skipper Rahul Sharma delivered a decent knock of 87 runs followed by Suryakumar Yadav (49) and KL Rahul (39). Willey took 3/45 while Woakes and Adil Rashid got two wickets each for England.

Chasing the 230 for a win, the sluggish England batting defence was so disorganized that it crumbled like a pack of cards under the pressure of Indian bowlers. The trio of Indian bowlers between the three Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Shami and Kuldeep Yadav picked up 9/78 between them, with Shami alone taking 4 out of the 9 giving out only 22. Shami has so far taken 40 wickets in the current tournament.

England were reduced to 52-5 inside 16 overs in a remarkable batting trouncing and were eventually bundled out for 129 in inside 35 overs. With this straight sixth win, India's dream run in the tournament continues unabated and is now almost close to a place in the semi-finals.
