Maaya Rajeshwaran: Coimatore’s tennis prodigy poised to shine globally

COIMBATORE: At just 15 years old, Maaya Rajeshwaran is rapidly emerging as one of India’s most promising tennis talents. Her recent performance at the L&T Mumbai Open WTA 125 Series has captured the attention of tennis enthusiasts worldwide. Maaya’s journey to the semifinals, where she defeated higher-ranked opponents, has made her the youngest Indian to earn a WTA point.

Born on June 12, 2009, Maaya’s introduction to tennis began as an after-school activity at the age of eight. Under the guidance of former India No. 1 K.G. Ramesh and later Manoj Kumar at the Pro Serve Tennis Academy, she quickly honed her skills.

Her recent success has earned her a year-long contract at the prestigious Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, where she will continue to develop her game. With plans to relocate to Spain this month, she is poised to elevate her game even further.

By the time she was 10, Maaya had already set her sights on a professional tennis career. Over the years, she made impressive strides, becoming a regular on the junior circuit since 2022. In 2023, she won five junior titles (four J60s and one J100) and earned an invitation to the Australian Open 2023 Under-14 showcase.

In 2024, Maaya made her junior Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open, though she was knocked out in the first round of qualifying by Germany’s Sonja Zhenikhova. Undeterred, she continued to impress, reaching the final of the Senior National Championships, where she finished as runner-up to Vaidehee Chaudhari. Along the way, she defeated several established players, including Riya Bhatia.

That same year, Maaya made her senior debut at an ITF W15 tournament in Egypt. In 2025, she won a J300 junior title in Delhi and broke into the top 60 of the Junior ITF rankings, earning a spot in the 2025 junior Grand Slams. Maaya’s inspiring journey in tennis continues as she remains focused on reaching her goal of a professional career in the sport.

With her fearless playing style and determination, Maaya is set to make a significant impact on the global tennis stage. Her idols, Serena Williams and Aryna Sabalenka, have inspired her to push her limits and strive for greatness. As she prepares to relocate to Spain, the tennis world eagerly awaits the rise of this young prodigy.
