PM Modi: 'TMC wants its corrupt leaders to get free license to commit crimes'

KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee's government saying that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) wants its corrupt leaders to get free license to commit crimes. The PM while addressing a large rally in Jalpaiguri referring to the state government as the 'TMC syndicate rule' said, "TMC has let their goons on the central investigations agencies. When they arrive here, they attack and threaten the team. TMC is the govt which is hell-bent on destroying the law and order.”

PM Modi's remarks followed reports of an NIA team being assaulted while attempting to apprehend two key suspects in a 2022 bombing case in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district during which one of the team members suffered some minor injuries and while there was damage to the NIA's vehicle. He also took a dig at the TMC regarding the recent controversies in Sandeshkhali involving allegations of sexual abuse against party leaders, PM Modi reassured the public that the perpetrators would face lifelong imprisonment.

He also said that the TMC govt doesn't implement the welfare initiatives of the Central govt. "They loot people's money. We are giving funds to the state, yet the benefits don't reach the intended beneficiaries in Bengal," he said, further adding, "TMC, Leftists and Congress are all partners in crime. To save each other, they formed the INDI alliance."

PM Modi accused the Mamata Banerjee-led state government of hindering the implementation of the centre's welfare programs for the underprivileged and slammed the TMC's dominance in Bengal. During his speech, he also offered condolences to the victims of a recent storm in Jalpaiguri, which struck in late March. Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal will take place in seven phases from April 19 till June 1 across 42 seats, and the results will be declared on June 4.
