In a BMW hit and run, Shinde Sena leader's son moves down women

MUMBAI: A woman was killed and her husband was injured in a hit-and-run incident in Mumbai's Worli area when a BMW car rammed their two-wheeler early on Sunday morning. The victims, Kaveri Nakhva and her husband Pradeep Nakhva, residents of Worli's Koliwada area, the fish-seller couple had gone to Sassoon Dock daily to fetch fish when the BMW vehicle knocked them down near Atria Mall around 5:30 am, police said.

The collision, which occurred from behind, resulted in severe injuries to the fisherman and his wife, Kaveri, and with the help of bystanders both the victims were rushed to Nair Hospital in Mumbai, however sadly, the wife succumbed to her injuries, while the husband remains under medical care. However, there are some other versions that are being reported as some eyewitnesses claim that while Pradeep was thrown away by the impact Kaveri actually landed on the bonnet and was dragged by the car some distance away from the accident spot after which the car sped away leaving the injured behind them.

It is alleged that the car was driven by Mihir Shah, the son of Rajesh Shah, deputy leader of the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde in Maharashtra's Palghar district, however, news reports said that he was not traceable from the site of the incident and that his phone has been switched off. Mumbai Police officials have said that efforts to arrest the driver, Mihir Shah, are underway.

Mihir's driver was also with him inside the car when the incident took place, according to police. NDTV has also reported that a Police investigation has also revealed that Mihir Shah, who is on the run, was drunk at the time of the incident and further quotes police sources that Mihir Shah drank at a bar in Juhu last night and on his way home, he asked the driver to take him a long drive. The car came to Worli and then Mihir insisted that he would drive. Soon after he took the wheel, the speeding BMW hit a scooter.

According to a report on NDTV police's investigation has also revealed attempts to destroy evidence. The car's windshield has a Shiv Sena sticker, which has been scratched, apparently to conceal the vehicle's link with the Sena leader. One of the car's number plates was also removed after the accident, but police scanned the CCTV footage of the area to zero in on the vehicle.

The incident comes months after a similar case of drink-driving left two 24-year-old engineers dead in Pune. The minor accused in the Pune crash was speeding a Porsche car after a round of drinking. The teen's father, a prominent realtor, his mother and his grandfather were arrested in the aftermath of the accident for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence. Maharashtra Chief Minister and Sena Leader Eknath Shinde has termed the incident "unfortunate" and assured action. "Law will take its own course, everyone is equal before the law. I have spoken to the police and strict action will be taken," he said.
