THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Malayalam film industry which is right now mired in a massive controversy following sexual harassment allegations as revealed by the Justice Hema Committee report recently and subsequent alleged charges made by actress Minu Muneer against several prominent figures in the industry is in turmoil. 

Amid more sexual harassment allegations pouring in a significant development, Mohanlal has resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) en-mass along with the entire 17-member governing committee of the association citing moral responsibility. 

In an official statement, the association said that the new leadership will be selected soon. The statement read, "We are hopeful that AMMA will have a new leadership capable of renewing and strengthening the association. We thank everyone for their criticism and corrections. A general body meeting to elect the new governing body is expected to take place within two months."

The Justice Hema Committee report, originally submitted to the Kerala government in 2019, had been kept under wraps until recent legal challenges were resolved and it was made public earlier this month, detailed numerous allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment against prominent figures in the industry, including veteran actor Siddique and filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan. Siddique, who was the general secretary of the association following allegations made by actress Revathy Sampath. He has however dismissed all allegations and has in turn lodged a complaint with Kerala police against Sampath after she accused him of sexual misconduct.

Other prominent Mollywood figures who have been named as alleged abusers include filmmakers Ranjith against whom Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra has alleged sexual harassment, Thulasidas who has been accused of alleged harassment by Mollywood actress Geetha Vijayan, actors including Jayasurya, Mukesh, Edavela Babu, and Maniyanpilla Raju has been accused by actress Minu Muneer of abuse and harassment and she has also filed a police complain against them. 

Transwoman actor and model Anjali Ameer also went public revealing a disturbing incident involving her co-star and famous actor Suraj Venjaramoodu who said he asked her an offensive question about private transgender experiences.
