Anubhav Sinha's web series, 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack' a well-crafted narrative

MUMBAI: Quite a few of us, especially those who must have been teenagers and above in the first days of circa 2000 would vividly remember when IC 814 from Kathmandu got hijacked on its way to Delhi, as it was the only news blaring 24/7 on the then few news channels. Visuals of how hundreds of lives were at stake as the country faced an alarming aviation crisis were the most talked about event in the New Year's week.

For many including myself, those memories may have faded and forgotten and some of the few films on the subject have not been able to vividly  bring any flashbacks, however Anubhav Sinha's web series, 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack' that debuted on Netflix did the opposite, it did flashback back the events in quite those details.

"IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack" is a gripping OTT series that delves into one of the most harrowing events in Indian aviation history. Based on the real-life hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 in December 1999, the series manages to combine thrilling storytelling with poignant moments that highlight the complexities of terrorism, negotiation, and human resilience.

From the outset, the series captivates viewers with its intense pacing and well-crafted narrative. The creators have done an admirable job of balancing the dramatization of events with factual accuracy, allowing audiences to grasp the sheer terror that passengers and crew members faced during the hijacking. The series intricately weaves in the emotional turmoil of the families left behind, creating a sense of urgency that permeates each episode.

The performances are commendable, with the lead actors delivering powerful portrayals of both the hijackers and the hostages. The tension between the characters is palpable, and the moral dilemmas faced by those involved are explored in depth. The series does an excellent job of illustrating the psychological impact of such traumatic experiences, making it more than just a standard thriller.

Cinematically, "IC 814" is beautifully shot, with a keen eye for detail that evokes the late '90s setting. The production design, combined with a haunting score, enhances the viewing experience, immersing audiences in the high-stakes world of international diplomacy and counter-terrorism.

However, some viewers may find certain aspects of the storytelling to be a bit rushed, particularly towards the climax. The series has a lot to cover, which sometimes leads to a hurried resolution. Nevertheless, the emotional weight of the narrative remains intact, and the series successfully conveys the message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

Overall, "IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack" is a must-watch for those who appreciate well-crafted dramas based on real events. It is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the lengths to which people will go to protect their loved ones. This series not only entertains but also educates, shedding light on a tragic chapter in history that continues to resonate today.
