'Laapataa Ladies' selected as India’s official 2025 Oscar entry

MUMBAI: In a major announcement, director Kiran Rao's film 'Laapataa Ladies,' a vibrant and thought-provoking film produced by Rao's former husband and actor Aamir Khan, has been officially chosen as India's entry for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

The announcement, which was made by the Film Federation of India (FFI) today, marks another milestone in India's ongoing quest for recognition at the prestigious Oscars. The film was selected from a pool of 29 submissions, which included contenders like Animal, Kalki 2898 AD, and All We Imagine As Light. The jury, chaired by filmmaker Jahnu Barua, praised 'Laapataa Ladies' for its compelling narrative and social relevance.

The theme of the film 'Laapataa Ladies,' which translates to 'Lost Ladies,' explores themes of patriarchy and societal norms through the story of two young brides who accidentally swap places during a train journey to their husbands' homes. The cast includes Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, and Nitanshi Goel.

The engaging story shows how two women from contrasting backgrounds inadvertently find themselves intertwined in a comedic yet poignant adventure. The film explores themes of identity, resilience, and the quest for self-discovery, all while tackling social issues with humor and grace.

The announcement was met with enthusiastic responses from industry insiders and fans alike. Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap praised the film's unique storytelling and its ability to resonate with audiences on multiple levels. "It's a proud moment not just for the cast and crew but for all of Indian cinema. 'Laapataa Ladies' represents the spirit of our country and its diverse narratives," he stated.

Social media platforms have been abuzz with excitement, with fans expressing their hopes for the film to make a significant impact at the Oscars. The film's director shared his gratitude for the recognition, stating, "We poured our hearts into this project. Being selected as India’s official entry is a dream come true, and we hope to share our story with the world."

India has a rich history of participating in the Oscars, with several films submitted over the years. However, the path to winning the coveted golden statuette has been challenging, and 'Laapataa Ladies' will aim to break that streak and bring home the award.

The film is now set to be screened at various international film festivals leading up to the Oscars, providing an opportunity for audiences worldwide to experience its charm and message.
