MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar, who has in the recent past forayed into politics, has filed for divorce from her husband, Mohsin Akhtar Mir, after eight years of marriage. The couple, who tied the knot in 2016, reportedly hit a rough patch, leading Urmila to initiate legal separation in Bandra, Mumbai.
While the exact reasons for the divorce remain undisclosed, sources close to the couple suggest that they have been facing challenges that ultimately led to this decision.
Urmila and Mohsin, a businessman and model from Kashmir, first met at their mutual friend designer Manish Malhotra’s niece’s wedding in 2014, sparking a quiet romance despite their nine-year age gap and different religious backgrounds. They married in March 2016 in a low-key nikah ceremony attended by close friends and family, including Manish Malhotra. Over the years, they have maintained a relatively private life, occasionally appearing together at events and sharing glimpses of their life on social media.
The announcement has garnered significant media attention, with fans and followers expressing their shock and support for Urmila during this difficult time. As the news continues to unfold, many are left wondering about the future for both Urmila and Mohsin as they navigate this new chapter in their lives.
This development marks a significant moment in Urmila Matondkar's personal life, as she steps away from a relationship that has been a part of her public persona for nearly a decade. She has had a very successful film career, starting as a child artist in the 1977 film Karm and Masoom in 1983, and later acted in dozens of films in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Tamil. Her most successful films with Ram Gopal Varma include the drama Rangeela in 1995, Satya in 1998, and Kaun? in 1999.
She forayed into politics, where she contested the 2019 elections as a Congress candidate from the Mumbai North constituency but lost. Soon after, she resigned from the party, citing petty internal politics, and in December 2020, joined Shiv Sena, although she has by and large remained inactive since then.
