MUMBAI: In response to a recent alert from the central intelligence agencies regarding potential terror threats, security measures in Mumbai have been significantly intensified. According to news reports, the Mumbai police have stepped up security in crowded areas, and enhanced security arrangements have been ramped up at many religious places and other crowded locations in Mumbai.

Mumbai, which celebrated the 10-day "Ganesh Chaturthi" festival this month, is now preparing for Durga Puja, Dussehra, and Diwali. This heightened vigilance comes as part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks and reassure the public amid rising concerns about terrorism, especially since the city has, in the past, witnessed major terror attacks.

Places of worship, like temples in the city, have been instructed to remain alert and report any suspicious activity as a precautionary measure. Sada Sarvankar, the chairman of the Siddhivinayak temple trust, told news agencies that the police have instructed them to increase the security of the temple. "We have been asked to pay attention to all the security arrangements," Sarvankar said.

As a measure designed to enhance the readiness of security personnel and ensure a swift response in the event of an emergency, authorities have instructed police forces to conduct mock drills at various public locations to prepare for any potential incidents. In such an initiative, the police on Friday conducted a mock drill in the crowded Crawford Market area, which houses two famous religious sites, and officials told the media that it was a security drill ahead of the festive season and was part of the precautionary steps taken by the police.

News reports also said that the Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) have been tasked with closely monitoring security in their respective zones, while temples have been specifically advised to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. It is noteworthy to mention that elections to the 288-member Maharashtra state assembly are also likely to be held in November.
