His death has deeply saddened the fashion industry, Bollywood celebrities, and fans worldwide.
Bal, who had been dealing with heart issues in recent years, was reportedly admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram in 2023 due to his condition. Despite his health struggles, he made a memorable comeback at the Lakme Fashion Week 2024, where his collection was celebrated as an emblem of his enduring passion and creativity. Known for his extravagant use of colors, intricate embroideries, and the revival of traditional Indian textiles, Bal’s designs were iconic, frequently showcased by celebrities at major events and on the international stage.
Tributes have poured in from celebrities and colleagues in the industry. Sonam Kapoor, who referred to Bal affectionately as "Gudda," shared a heartfelt message, remembering the honor of wearing his creations. Kareena Kapoor, Ananya Panday, and Sidharth Malhotra also posted tributes, with Panday, his last muse at the recent fashion show, expressing her sadness with a touching homage. The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), where Bal served as a founding member, honored his contributions, acknowledging his role in redefining Indian fashion.
Born into a Kashmiri Pandit family in Srinagar, Bal drew inspiration from Kashmir's rich culture, translating it into designs that resonated with audiences globally. Over his career, he dressed a roster of international stars, including Cindy Crawford and Pamela Anderson, and was often referred to as a bridge between traditional Indian craftsmanship and modern fashion. Bal’s passing marks the end of an era, but his artistry, influence, and vision for Indian fashion continue to inspire designers and admirers alike.
