FIR against Mithun Chakraborty for 'provocative' speech

KOLKATA: Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty landed in legal trouble after delivering a controversial speech at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event in Kolkata's Salt Lake area on October 27. The West Bengal police on Wednesday, November 6, registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Chakraborty for allegedly making provocative statements that could incite violence.

During the event at Salt Lake, Chakraborty, who was recently honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, made remarks that referenced a previous comment by Trinamool Congress Party's Humayun Kabir. Chakraborty called on BJP supporters to "chop them up and bury them in the ground," a statement that has sparked significant controversy.

The veteran actor-turned-politician said, "A leader says there are 70 per cent Muslims and 30 per cent Hindus and that he will 'cut' and throw them in the Bhagirathi. I thought Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would say something. She didn’t... so now I am saying, we will chop them (up) and bury them in the ground." Kabir's previous comments had been censured by the Election Commission.

Chakraborty's comments came shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah felicitated him at the event. He also repeated this threat, calling the river "our mother" and declaring, "I say we will cut you up and throw you, not in the Bhagirathi because that is our mother, but we will throw you in the ground." Chakraborty also said that the state government was not allowing the Hindu community to cast votes.

The BJP has defended Chakraborty, with state BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of using the police to target the actor for political reasons.

As per the complaint, the police have initiated an investigation into the case, and Chakraborty has yet to comment on the matter. The incident has further intensified the political tensions in West Bengal as the state prepares for the upcoming elections.
