Allu Arjun arrested in connection with the death of a woman in stampede, gets bail

HYDERABAD: Telugu actor Allu Arjun was arrested on Friday in connection with the death of a woman in a stampede during the premiere of his blockbuster “Pushpa 2: The Rule” featuring Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil, which has surpassed Rs 820 crore in net earnings in India.

He was taken in custody from his house in Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad on Friday by a police team, hours after he returned from Delhi after attending the success meet of ‘Pushpa 2’ and produced in a lower court which had remanded him to 14-day judicial custody. His legal team immediatly moved to the Telangana High Court which granted interim bail for four weeks, citing his right to liberty.

Justice Juvvadi Sridevi of the High Court, who heard the actor’s bail application moved as a lunch motion, directed Allu Arjun to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 to the prison authorities. “He couldn’t be detained just because he’s an actor...he cannot be held like this,” the court said.

Despite securing bail, Allu Arjun had to spend one night in jail and walked out on Saturday morning. The actor left the jail premises from the back gate with his father Allu Aravind and father-in-law Kancharla C.

On December 4, a stampede broke out at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad on December 4. The incident resulted in the death of a 39-year-old woman, identified as Revathi, and left her eight-year-old son hospitalised.

The Hyderabad police called this visit by the actor as an “unscheduled” visit to the auditorium which led to the incident in which the woman was killed and her son was injured and they registered a case against Allu Arjun, his security team, and the management of the theatre, which was based on a complaint filed by the victim’s husband.

The arrest of the star actor Allu Arjun drew widespread reactions from all political corners in Telangana. While the opposition parties criticised the Revanth Reddy-led government, Congress defended the action against the ‘Pushpa 2’ star in the Sandhya Theatre stampede case.
