Trump becomes 47th president of the United States; Declares it's beginning of 'golden age'

NEW DELHI: Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025, marking his second non-consecutive term, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts, pledging to 'preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.'

Along with Trump, his deputy Vice President JD Vance also took the oath of office alongside Trump, making history as one of the youngest vice presidents in US history. Usha Vance, JD Vance's wife, became the first Indian-American and Hindu to serve as Second Lady of the United States.

The inauguration ceremony, held indoors due to freezing weather, saw Trump take the oath of office in the Capitol Rotunda. This historic event made Trump the second leader in US history to serve non-consecutive presidential terms, following Grover Cleveland.

In his inaugural address, Trump proclaimed that the "golden age" of America had begun. In a forceful inaugural address, he referred to January 20 as "liberation day" and declared that "America's decline is over," vowing rapid changes. Trump also outlined his vision for the next four years, emphasizing a "thrilling new era" for America. He promised swift actions to halt "American decline" and signed approximately 80 executive orders aimed at reversing major policies of the Biden administration.

Trump's return to the White House was marked by a flurry of additional executive orders, including orders declaring a national emergency at the southern border, ending birthright citizenship, and delaying the TikTok ban. These actions were part of a broad plan that included more than 50 items in total.

Among these actions were reinstating the "Remain in Mexico" immigration policy, classifying cartels and gangs as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, withdrawing the US from the Paris climate agreement, and pausing the TikTok ban for 75 days.

Trump's executive orders also included a mass pardon for approximately 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. This sweeping clemency was part of his effort to terminate the largest investigation and prosecution in the history of the Justice Department.

Notably, S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, was present at the event representing the Indian government at the ceremony. Jaishankar carried a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to present to President Trump, in a move to strengthen Indo-US relations.

The inauguration day was filled with various events, including a lively campaign-style rally and a series of evening inaugural balls. The celebrations began on Sunday, with the President-elect's family and allies participating in various events in Washington DC. The long-awaited finale to the public inauguration event schedule saw Trump sign a slate of executive orders before crowds of fans who were not able to witness the swearing-in ceremony on the National Mall.
