Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina who made abhorrent remarks
MUMBAI: A police case has been filed against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, and others over offensive remarks made during an episode of 'India's Got Latent.' The controversy erupted when Allahbadia posed a vulgar question to a contestant, leading to widespread backlash.
India's Got Latent a YouTube reality show hosted by Raina, is known for its often provocative content and participants have been seen very causally using sexually explicit language during the show. The said controversy sparked immediately after Allahbadia asked a contestant a very gross question on the show, "Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life, or would you join in once and stop it forever?"
Following the complaint, Mumbai police initiated an inquiry into Allahbadia, Raina, and others present at the event, including content creators Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Mukhija. According to media reports, a team of Mumbai police visited the Habitat building in the Khan area of Mumbai's suburbs, where the show was filmed.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the responsibility of content creators and the need for stricter regulations to prevent the dissemination of inappropriate material on digital platforms. Allahbadia’s offensive remark about parents and sex prompted the YouTuber (who has nearly 16 million followers) to apologize, admitting that comedy is not his forte.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Guwahati police have registered cases against five YouTubers, including Allahbadia, for allegedly promoting obscenity. He stated that the influencers engaged in "sexually explicit and vulgar discussions" on the show.
In response to the incident, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has urged the Centre to introduce strict regulations to curb the rise of obscene content on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms. In a letter to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar called for immediate action, requesting stringent guidelines to prevent platforms from streaming or allowing users to upload inappropriate content.
In light of the backlash to his comments, Allahbadia issued an apology, acknowledging his lapse in judgment and expressing regret for his inappropriate remarks. He admitted that comedy is not his forte and pledged to be more responsible with his platform.
