NEW DELHI: United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to discuss the division of assets between Ukraine and Russia as part of ongoing efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in the war-torn region. Speaking to the media, Trump said, "A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance."
While aboard Air Force One during a flight back to the White House after his weekend at Mar-a-Lago, Trump revealed that he would engage in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. The discussions will focus on key issues such as land and power plants.
Although Putin has stated that Moscow agrees with the proposal in theory, he has repeatedly claimed that the current Ukrainian government is part of the "root cause" of the war.
Meetings between American negotiators and representatives from Ukraine and Russia are ongoing this week. The Kremlin announced last week that U.S. negotiators would travel to Russia for further talks. However, Putin’s response to Trump’s ceasefire proposal remains unclear, as he has set tough conditions and demanded concessions from Kyiv.
The discussions follow Ukraine’s acceptance of a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire, contingent on Russia's agreement. The Kremlin has tentatively supported the ceasefire but imposed stringent conditions, including guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO.
Trump, however, expressed confidence, stating that Russia was "very, very positive" about the talks. He added, "We’re doing pretty well, I think, with Russia. We’ll see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I’ll be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday."
