Amid tensions, Dy CM Ajit Pawar reaffirms his support for the Muslim community

MUMBAI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has reaffirmed his support for the Muslim community during an iftar gathering in Mumbai, amid ongoing tensions over the Aurangzeb tomb row and recent communal violence in Nagpur.

Pawar emphasized the importance of unity and social harmony, warning that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to intimidate Muslims or spread communal hatred.

Speaking at the event, Pawar stated, "Your brother Ajit Pawar is with you. If anyone dares to intimidate our Muslim brothers and sisters or tries to create communal discord, they will not be spared."

He highlighted the significance of festivals like Holi, Gudi Padwa, and Eid in fostering togetherness and underscored India’s strength in diversity.

"No one should threaten the nationalist Muslim community who are working for the development of the state and country. India is a diverse nation where people of different castes, creeds, and religions live together peacefully. No one should take the law into their own hands and threaten members of the Muslim community. As a brother, I am standing with them in difficult times. And no one should fall into the trap of divisive forces," Pawar said at the public event.

The remarks come amid heightened political debates in Maharashtra, with right-wing groups demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb and opposition leaders criticizing the state government for its handling of communal tensions. Pawar’s statement is seen as a significant gesture of solidarity with the Muslim community, reinforcing his party’s commitment to secularism and inclusivity.

Earlier, Ajit Pawar assured his supporters that his party remains secular and progressive, emphasizing that despite being in alliance with the BJP and holding power at both the state and central levels, it would not compromise on its ideology.

Reacting to Pawar’s statement, former union minister Narayan Rane took a jibe, saying Pawar has started an "eye-checking business," referencing his remark on taking action against those who target Muslims.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified that no action would be taken against nationalist Muslims who contribute to society’s development but warned that those involved in anti-national activities would face consequences.
